NBC Watertown's Day in Kingston

Sep 16, 2024 03:12PM ● By Nicole Petrus
On Friday, September 13th, NBC Watertown took the office out of the country. That's right, we went to Canada! We took the short drive over to Kingston, ON for a day out on the town!

Arriving at the Delta Hotel, we were greeted by their friendly staff who escorted us to our private, waterfront conference room. While admiring the views and fancy speedboats, we were able to discuss and plan for our next and final quarter of the year. In the midst of our meeting, we enjoyed a delicious lunch catered by the hotel. Our lunch consists of a variety of burgers, lobster rolls and fish & chips. It was hard to focus after a meal like that.

Upon completion of our meeting, we said our goodbye's to the awesome Delta staff and took the eight minute drive to the Kingston Penitentiary

Closing in 2013, the Kingston Penn became an interesting tourist spot for Kingston. From the outside all you can see is limestone and barbed wire, but on the inside, the walls hold decades of stories.

Guided by our tour guide, Rob, we were able to walk the halls of the abandoned prison listening to it's interesting history. Retired Corrections officers painted us the mental picture of the four day, 1971 prison riot held at Kingston Penn. Sitting in the very spot the riot took place, we were able to imagine in detail how it must of been like. The cells are set up exactly how they would of been before the prison's closing. Paintings decorated the cells and an eerie feeling crept down your spine as you proceeded through the halls.

We were taken to the site where Ty Conn, the notorious prison escapee, escaped from the Kingston Penn in 1999. Learning about his adverse childhood and his unfortunate death.  Among many other stories, Rob filled us with knowledge of the Kingston Penn.

It was an experience to learn and hear about the events that took place within the gray walls.

NBC Watertown would like to thank the Delta Hotel for their hospitality, Rob and the Kingston Penitentiary for their awesome guide and tour. Kingston, we will be back!
